You should have seen my face when the UPS man rang the bell this afternoon. It was already a nice day — the sun was shining, I had gone for a bike ride, and Spring was in the air. I hugged the two packages like a kid on Christmas morning. You will see a lot of new black and white work in the coming weeks. I’m processing film at home in the kitchen now, and with this new Zeiss 50mm f/1.5 C Sonnar, I will be shooting mostly with my Leica M3.

The leather strap was made by Artisan & Artist out of Japan. Such fine craftsmanship by both Zeiss and A&A. I am 25% Japanese and sized similarly to an average Japanese man. The A&A strap fits as if it were custom made for me.

What joy to be found in perfectly made tools! They permit us to create the work that gives our life meaning.

I’m as happy as a clam (big smile).

Sorry. I forget who made this work, but it sure is good. I might remember some day. That’s surfing the internet without taking good enough notes I guess.

Harry Callahan & The Institute of Design

I have reserved every book on Harry Callahan available from the Chicago Public Library. Lately I’ve really been into the Institute of Design photographers, i.e. Callahan, Siskind, Siegel. There is one book (an incredible piece of work) that the CPL doesn’t have for some reason. That book is, Aaron Siskind and Louis Sullivan: The Institute of Design Photo Section Project by Jeffrey Plank. I have ordered it through Powell’s bookstore here in Chicago (not to be mistaken with Powell’s of Portland). I am planning on running around town photographing what remains of Louis Sullivan’s work, in order to provide a 21st century survey — and to see all of his glorious buildings in person. I will provide images as they are created.

mossing_site

Recently completed a website for Adria East Mossing, LLC, a law firm in Chicago.

Adria Mossing was the sort of client you dream about. She chose the mock-up I hoped she would, she gave me complete creative control, and she delivered the content for her site quickly! WOW! I’ll consider myself lucky to ever encounter a client like her again.

It was a fun project to work on for another reason too. I always aim to produce original photographs for a new website, and mossinglaw.com was the first site I did since picking up the Canon 5D. I was so excited that I even rented a few L series lenses for the shoot.
